Random Thoughts Thursday: Too long to tweet on twitter

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

If every single one of us in this world were to turn every appliance that required electricity off for one hour, we would probably see a significant difference in the global climate a couple years down the road. On that theory, I’m beginning to think it was the 80’s and early 90’s that is behind our depleting ozone layer to-date. Think of all the hairspray everyone used during that era…. Hell I wasn’t even a teenager and I went through a bottle of hairspray a week. Plus it was the 80s that saw a major development in production and industrializing economies. Even wikipedia coined the 80s as a time where fashion was inspired by “hair metal bands, including teased hair….” If there is any truth to this theory – the future of our children is doomed. History repeats itself – especially in areas like fashion. Fashion includes hair styles which includes hair spray. I could go on – just saying.

Random musings

I spent a good half of the morning reading up on “10 secrets of the effortlessly thin“. It’s not really a secret cause I knew all this already and I’m not thin. I should be reading up on material like “10 secrets to follow on through things you already know and should do:-( I’m on this yo-yo diet/weight loss thing. Once I get into the groove of things Aunt Ruby soho decides to visit and totally throw me off my guard.

So I’m listening to “King of the Kerb” by Echobelly. I guess I hadn’t played it too many times at its peak so now I have the initial “oh wow I’m really digging this track“. Also it’s got a very “school’s out and I’m going to bum around ” – 90’s feel to it.

Some people have substance abuse. I have no-substance abuse. It’s making me kind of wonky.

Step One!…We can have lots of.. WTF?

My childhood is at times a little hazy. I remember “seeing” things which I still can’t prove are real or made-up.

When I was younger (and barely a teen) – I got my education and reading material from magazines like Circus, Metal Edge and Hit Parader. I would buy them in 2nd hand bookshops a couple months (or even years) after the original publish date. I remembered picking up a copy of CIRCUS magazine once and saw New Kids on the Block featured in it and was seriously What the Fucking. 20 years later it still kind of boggles me up till a few minutes ago when I found an article written in 1990 about this.

In short, the New Kids on the Block boosted sales in teen magazines when they appeared in or on the front cover. The idiot at Circus Magazine thought maybe by featuring NKOTB in their “Heavy Metal” magazine, it would appeal to other teens to buy the magazine and eventually “dawdle a little bit” before moving up to magazines like CIRCUS. The magazine had one of the sharpest fall offs, a 29.3 percent drop, from 307,092 in the first half of 1989 to 217,056 in 1990. Now the WTF award goes to the publisher and editor in Chief for Circus Magazine at the time – Gerald Rothberg – for thinking this kind of marketing would work. Brave move but FAIL.

a somewhat ‘ticky tacky’ post

As I’ve become increasingly uninteresting with age, I’ve also upped a notch in total randomness (ie – ranting about drama going on in my life). Thank you TWITTER for allowing me to express nothing in 140 characters or less.

Here’s something that rock my socks off right now.

WEEDS
I’ve had friends telling me how awesome the show is and it took me a couple years to finally start watching/catching up on the show. Jump one month later, I am more than halfway throughthe 4th season. To quote my twitter:

“Don’t think I’ve ever gone from hating to loving a character in the same ep. every ep. It’s so emotionally titilating”.

Main character breakdown

Nancy Botwin portrayed by Mary-Louise Parker
Nancy Botwin
She’s like your naive yet smart mother. She has a plan and she doesn’t even know it. I find she communicates well with her eyes. She’s got huge eyes that you can crawl into. She’s kinda like a slut which makes you kind of hate her. Love her cause you know you’d hit it too.

Celia Hodes portrayed by Elizabeth Perkins
Celia Hodes

She’s probably one of my favourite characters on this show. I go from hating to loving her in almost every episode. Pure fucking brilliance.

Andy Botwin portrayed by Justin Kirk
Andy Botwin
Andy is Nancy’s brother-in-law. I can’t help but like this guy. He means well though it doesn’t always translate well. He’s funny, he cooks well (oooh!) and is kinda cute. He reminds me of someone too and can’t help but see bits of this person in Andy – which makes me feel like I know him.

Silas Botwin portrayed by Hunter Parrish
Silas Botwin
He was kind of annoying at first – and still kinda is. He thinks he’s “the man” but damn by Season 4, boy got HOTTTTT. Like “oh my god – he’s so hot” everytime he gets on screen.

Shane Botwin portrayed by Alexander Gould
Shane Botwin
Though Silas may think he’s ‘the man’ – Shane is THE MAN..well boy – whatever. Kid is smart and way ahead of his time. If there was a guy like this that went to my school when I was 12/13 years old, I’d be all over him like cheese on macaroni.

Doug Wilson portrayed by Kevin Nealon
Doug Wilson
I use to watched Saturday Night Live when Kevin Nealon was a regular cast member. I think this character is probably just natural for him to play. I also read on wiki that he improvises most of his lines for the show. He’s like a more tolerable version of Will Ferrell.

Honourable Mention:

Guillermo
GUILLERMO - the hot shot drug dealer guy that’s in season 3 and 4. You are scared of him – then you eventually grow to like him and think he’s kind of sweet (for a drug dealer).

Conrad

CONRAD - I liked him until he hooked up with Nancy.
